The Saga of Mr. and Mrs. Red Finch

This has been a very eventful week for the two finch families. This nest is on our front porch. The basket is on a tiered plant stand. The other day my husband found it laying on the porch with broken eggs on the porch. Our guess is that Groucho finally made it up to the nest. I had tried to fix it so he couldn't get to it - but it looks like I failed. I have not see the finches since then. I think this confirms there are two families.

Just as early as last week we spotted this nice little nest in the Boston fern on the patio. We were not sure if this was a diversion nest or an actual finch home. Now we have confirmed a finch family is living in it.

Do you notice anything different about this fern?

I found several leaves on the patio. Wondering what was going on - it hit me. The cats (or maybe just Groucho) have been climbing on the patio table, grill and planters trying to jump up and get the fern pulled down. ARGGGGGGGGGGG! Trust me Groucho was put in the time-out bed.

But, with a spot check of the nest we were happy to find three pretty blue eggs. Ahhhhh! Tomorrow's chores will include cleaning the patio and rearranging the table, chairs and grill. Happy to say I still see Mr. and Mrs. Red Finch flying in and out of the nest. I hope they treat themselves to the finch food sock we have hanging out there for them. Ciao!

I had a bridal veil plant years ago. Put it out on the patio, it was 3-4 ft long trailing over the edges of the hanging pot. I went out a few days later to water it and most of the trailers were laying on the patio!!!! A GRASSHOPPER was on the edge happily munching his way around the edge. I DETEST grasshoppers and that one didn't change my opinion.

Hmmmmmmmmm, I think I've already mentioned my "cats are indoor pets" story, haven't I? :-)

I love your plant and nest pictures. Groucho really thinks he's helping you - heheh.

You just don't need any help!
