Spring is in the air

Not too much to report today - still trying to recoup from the time change and the dentist.
This little homestead belongs to Mr. and Mrs. Red Finch. They are building this little nest on our front porch in a silk flower arrangement. We only see them in the morning. I am not sure if this is a "diversion" nest or not. The finches are known for making a nest away from the original nest to deter predators (i.e. Noodles and Groucho). I don't see any eggs in this nest yet. Last summer we had a nest right in the middle of a Boston fern. I forget what type of bird it was - but they made their nest inside the fern using their own poop and grass (hope this didn't gross you out). That made it very hard to water the fern. However, they raised two nestings of chicks, about 5 each time. I will keep you posted this summer on the "Mr & Mrs Red Finch Build Their Dream Home" (Cary Grant fan here).

Note to Kay - so very sorry I accidentally deleted the "Karen going solo" picture. Ouch - ticked myself off on that one. Sorry.

Ciao!

What a perfect nest! I can't wait to see progress pictures. : )

Was it a type of Wren family in your fern last year? Maybe Carolina Wrens? They like to nest in places like that.
