Is It Just an Italian Thing????

I have a love for food. All kinds of food. I even like combining some foods together because of the taste, such as Peanut Butter (creamy or crunchy) and Banana sandwiches, eating Bananas and Potato chips together and pretty much anything Italian. When I was in Gubbio visiting family my cousin Mauro asked why I knew all the names of the foods? Indicating my Italian was lacking in other areas. ha



Last week I was in Boston. I had the pleasure of visiting Mike's Pastry on Hanover St. It is always a delight to walk through the North End of Boston. This is truly the Italian section. The restruants were crowded and open. The pastry shop was full. I bought some cookies and love the way they place them in a box tied with string coming down through the ceiling. We only get cakes in boxes around here. A lady was buying a 8" round decorated birthday cake. I asked her if their cakes were good. She looked me straight in the eye and said "They are PHENOMENAL!" I can only tell you it looked beautiful. It had chopped pistascio nuts on the sides. I had to ask her what was on the sides because I could only come up with split peas in that color and didn't think they would put split peas on a cake. duh!


It was such a cultural renewal to walk through the North End and hear the language of my family spoken in sidewalk conversations. The Italian language has so much character. The food is delicious too.
